The recent trend in the past few years was to build houses bigger. You got a bigger kitchen, bedrooms, dining room and garage. More room equals more storage space. Logic would say the bigger the house you have, the more stuff you will have. But what about the little guys and gals. The ones with the old cape cod style houses where you can barely fit a sub compact car in it let alone store anything in there. As you get older, more stuff accumulates. But the garage does not get any bigger.
Lets start with the basics. One thing you have to keep in mind is that there is no unusable space in the garage. Get it into your head that every square inch of available space all around this room can be used to store something in an organized fashion. You may end up buying or building a storage apparatus. The money you spend will be money well spent on getting your garage organized.

Now lets discover the unused storage space that most people do not even consider. The ceiling is one of these spaces. How many garages have you been in and seen a whole lot of empty space up on the ceiling. All that great space is just calling out to have some stuff stored up there. Christmas and other holiday paraphernalia can be stored up there since it is only used once a year.
How about using that little bit of space over top of the garage door. You can easily buy or make a shelf that will hang down from the ceiling. It will not hang down enough to interfere with the operation of the garage door. This garage organizing idea is perfect for snow shovels in the summer and garden tools in the winter.
Here's one I bet you never thought of. You can actually buy a rack that will attach to the garage doors track. How is that for using all available space.
Do you like to fish? Get yourself some racks designed specifically to hold fishing rods. Mount these up high on the wall. They will be out of the way. They will also be relatively easy to access early in the morning when heading out to catch your dinner.
Don't waste the wall space either. Hooks will do wonders for you. Hang those big old shovels and snow shovels on the wall. Hang those extension cords up on a hook all nice and neatly wrapped in a circle.
Throw up a piece of peg board. Put some hooks on it. Now hang your tools on the peg board hooks. They will be neatly organized. Even better than being organized, you will be able to find them and place them back where they came from. No more wasting precious minutes hunting for something you need.
Having a small garage and getting it organized can be a tough road to drive down. With a little planning and the use of your brain power, that cluttered garage can become a well organized room. You may even actually enjoy going in there to. Organizing your home is really rewarding.
